WHERE I LIVE

This is the Market Street Bridge, approx. 3 miles from my house, and a main artery into the city and huge populations of business, and homes.

This is a shot of the levee system approx. 5 miles away from me.

This is a shopping center 1 mile away from my house.

This is what we are living through now. It is the flood of 2011. The Susquehanna river was expected to crest at 2 am this morning at 40.8 feet. The new levee system was built to 41 feet after the Agnes flood of 72 destroyed the entire valley. The river crested at 38.8. There is devasting damage to all of the communities surrounding me. I live on a huge hill, so fortunate to never live through the actual floods, but everywhere I turn, it is in front of me. Many members of my family are displcaced at the moment, 65, ooo. people have been evacuated. It has been a hellish 2 days here, we all feel hopeless and sick to our stomachs. We have been blessed to be spared the worst, but so many people in low lying areas have already lost so much. We have not seen flooding like this in 40 years. If you are interested you can google the agnes flood of 1972, and see what the devastation was like.

Please keep our community in your prayers.

Oh my dear Sharon, how very terrible, and how awful. I feel so thankful, you are still safe, and living on the hill, but I understand your pain and fear- !
It must be painful knowing your family have to be evacuated, not knowing what they will return to.
You and everyone will be in my prayers, dearest friend.
Hugs and love,Dorthe

I am so sorry, this has been such an awefull time of loss and stress. We had 26 tornados in Al, and only lost our roof, so my heart goes out to our neighbors to the north. This has been a difficult year indeed. I will continue to pray for those in trouble.
Have faith

Hello Sharon,
your post makes me sorrowful. I watched the images of flooding with my dismay. I am sorry for all the suffering people of your city. Let your life back to normal as soon as possible. All the best!

Glad to hear that all is well with you. I know it is hard to realize you are the lucky one while so many have lost so much. We have to remember there is always a rainbow after the rain and everyone will find their place again when the waters have receded, just as they did after the floods of 72. God bless one and all. Tammy

So sad...all the flooding in the Northeast. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your community. I didn't realize you were so close to the Susquehanna. We follow the river on our way to our place in PA.

Sharon, I didn't know you lived near flooding-- my prayers go out to your community as they do for ours. Just a few miles from our home entire communities still have no egress into the world, due to completely destroyed roads. My grandmother used to tell us stories about her days in Forty Fort, how the river would lap up one step per day, up the interior staircase of her house. She never liked the water! We are thankful that our VT communities have come together to rebuild and share resources.

I live in a river town also. We have regular flooding and then a few years ago we had a "100" year flood. What a difference. It is very very hard to cope with that kind of flooding .... And everyone just sort of walks around in a daze ... It is unbelievable. I am glad that you are safe, but I know that is little consolation for you when so many local businesses and friends and family are devastated. Our prayers are with you .....

I am so glad your home is on higher ground. I know how you feel, Nashville went through flooding 1 1/2 years ago when the Cumberland river crested at 52 ft. It is such a hopeless feeling. Thinking of you and your community. Be well.

Hi Sharon. Just got back from Maine this morning. I was seriously worried about you this past week. So happy to here that you live on higher ground there, but sorry to hear about the devastation around you.

Sharon, your pictures say it all. This is the second time I've had to evacuate due to high water. Thank God for the levee, but my heart goes out to the communities that weren't so lucky. The devastation is terrible. I'm glad you didn't have to evacuate and weren't affected by this situation. I finally got some good rest last night when we were allowed to return home. My cats were very happy to be home as well.

Horrible. What a terrible year it has been with so many extremes. Your part has this horrible flooding and Texas is burning. Glad you are safe and dry. So many have lost so much.
